Physical Geography

Territory

Torri in Sabina is located 275 meters above sea level and is situated on a rocky ridge. The town is surrounded by two streams - one on the north-west side and another on the south-east side. Near the villages of Rocchette and Rocchettine, flows the Aia stream, a tributary of the Tiber River. In this area, you can admire the stunning waterfalls of Cascatelle.

Climate

Torri in Sabina's climate classification is of type D, 1954 GR/G.

History

The town's history dates back to the medieval period - as early as 747, the Farfa register mentions the donation of a casalis called Turris. In 1298, the existence of a castle is attested, which passed to the ownership of the Holy See in 1364. From 1368, the town became the property of the Orsini family, who remained its owners until the death of Anna de la Tremouille, Flavio Orsini's wife, in 1728. From this point on, the town returned to the ownership of the Holy See.

In 1817, Torri in Sabina became an autonomous municipality of the Governorate of Calvi. After the unification of Italy, it was assigned to the province of Perugia, and finally, in 1927, it became part of the new province of Rieti.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Religious Architecture

Torri in Sabina is rich in churches. Most of them are dedicated to saints such as San Valentino, San Nicola di Bari, Madonna del Colle, San Giovanni Battista, and Sant'Egidio. However, the Church of Santa Maria della Lode in Vescovio is one of the most important and historic religious buildings in the town. Built in the early decades of the 9th century, this church was the cathedral of the Sabine diocese before it was moved to Magliano Sabina in 1733. Inside the church, you can admire the 12th-century frescoes depicting the stories of the Old and New Testament and the Last Judgment.

Military Architecture

Two of the most interesting attractions are Rocchette and Rocchettine, two fortified medieval settlements belonging to the Savelli family. The first mention of these castles dates back to the 14th century. Today, Rocchette has become a populated center while Rocchettine has been abandoned for some years. However, the Church of San Lorenzo, recently restored, is open to the public only on August 10 (the day of San Lorenzo, patron saint of Rocchettine) and can be visited upon request.

Archaeological Sites

The archaeological area of the Roman municipium of Forum Novum, dating back to the 2nd century BC, is another attraction of the town. Here, you can admire the remains of ancient Roman structures such as the theater, the temple, and a series of funerary monuments.

Conclusion

Torri in Sabina is a place full of surprises and charm. If you're looking for an authentic experience, we recommend visiting this small Italian town and enjoying its history, natural beauty, and architectural treasures.
