Discover the beauty of Rieti: history, art, and nature!

Physical Geography

Territory

Rieti is located in the Piana Reatina, surrounded by the Monti Reatini to the east and the Monti Sabini to the west. The historic center is located on a small hill and the territory is rich in waterways and lakes. Among the most famous lakes, we find Lake Piediluco, Lake Ventina, Lake Lungo, and Lake Ripasottile.

But what makes Rieti unique is its water. In fact, just outside the city, you can find the famous Fonti di Cottorella, which produce a high-quality mineral water. In addition, the sources of the Peschiera river, located in the nearby town of Cittaducale, provide much of the water needed for Rome. And if you are lovers of thermal baths, you cannot miss Cotilia, where you can find rich sulfur water sources.

History

From origins to the present day

Rieti has a long and fascinating history. Founded at the beginning of the Iron Age, it became an important city of the Sabines. Later, it was conquered by the Romans in 290 BC and, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, by the Visigoths. Under the Lombards, it was a gastaldato in the Duchy of Spoleto.

Becoming part of the Papal States, Rieti constituted a frontier territory with the Kingdom of Naples. In the thirteenth century, it was often a papal seat and in 1860 it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. From that moment, Rieti passed under the province of Perugia, in Umbria, but in 1923 it was incorporated into the province of Rome and in 1927 the province of Rieti was established, of which it became the capital.

Wonders of Rieti

What to see in the city

Rieti is a city full of treasures. In the historic center, you can admire the Cathedral of Santa Maria, in Romanesque style, with its majestic stone facade decorated in relief. But it is not the only church worth visiting. Among others, we find the Church of San Francesco, the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, and the Church of San Domenico.

But Rieti is not only churches. You can visit the Civic Museum, where you will find works of art and ancient artifacts, and the Episcopal Palace, which hosts numerous cultural events. For a beautiful view of the city, I recommend visiting the Belvedere of Monte Terminillo, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Piana Reatina and the Monti Reatini.
