Fontana Liri
Hello everyone! Today I want to share with you some interesting information about the small Italian town of Fontana Liri, located in the province of Frosinone, in Lazio.
Origin of the name
The town's name comes from a spring called "Fontana Abballe" which still exists today. The word "Liri" was added between 1862-1863 to distinguish the town from other places with the same name, as it is located south of the Liri River.
Physical geography
The town's territory is crossed by the Liri River and has a climate classified as zone D, 1523 GR/G.
History
The coat of arms of the town of Fontana Liri was recognized by decree of the Prime Minister's Secretary of State on July 12, 1929. Additionally, the municipal gonfalon, granted by decree of the President of the Republic on May 3, 2016, is a white ensign with a red border.
Society
The population of Fontana Liri is 2724 inhabitants and many of them profess the Catholic Church within the diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo. In the town is the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima di Loreto, whose feast is celebrated in July and August. Legend has it that in the mid-seventeenth century, during a journey passing through a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, 3 drops of blood appeared on the fresco of Mary with the Baby Jesus: from there, the cult was born and in the following decades the sanctuary was built.
Architecture
Fontana Liri Superiore is dominated by a small castle, the historic center, and the church of Santa Croce where the movie "Per grazia ricevuta" by Nino Manfredi was filmed.
Culture
Fontana Liri is the hometown of Umberto Mastroianni, and a sculpture by the artist is exhibited in the main square of Fontana Liri Inferiore. Additionally, it is the hometown of actor Marcello Mastroianni, and scenes from the movie "Per grazia ricevuta" were shot in the town center of Fontana Liri Superiore.
Economy
According to Istat data, in 2015 there were 140 active companies in Fontana Liri, with 348 employees. Additionally, the number of active companies and employees is increasing compared to the previous year, which is good news for the local economy.
In summary, Fontana Liri is a small town with a lot of history and culture, a growing economy, and a predominantly Catholic population that celebrates the festival of the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima di Loreto every year. If you have the opportunity to visit the province of Frosinone, I recommend a visit to Fontana Liri!
