Arpino extends on the left side of the middle valley of the Liri River, on a hilly system that reaches an altitude of about 650 m with the Acropolis of Arpino, also called "Civitavecchia". The municipal territory has a maximum altitude of 837 m (Montecoccioli location) and a minimum altitude of 192 m.

The landscape is characterized by the presence of centuries-old woods and olive groves. Agriculture continues to be an important activity for the area.

Climate

Arpino has a warm and dry climate during summer, with occasional afternoon showers. Autumn is cool and moderately rainy, while winter is cold and humid, with rain and sometimes snow. Spring is variable, mild and moderately rainy. Foggy episodes are not uncommon.

Origin of the name

The name "Arpino" is believed to derive from the peculiar shape of the city as seen from above, resembling that of a harp.

History

The exact date of the foundation of Arpino is not known, but archaeological findings testify to the presence of the Volsci. The city was later conquered by the Romans and included among their municipalities.

According to tradition, the foundation of the city dates back to the god Saturn or the Pelasgi, like other cities in southern Lazio. On a Latin-language plaque placed on Porta Napoli, you can read the inscription recalling the foundation tradition.

Arpino was the hometown of illustrious figures such as Marcus Tullius Cicero, known as the prince of eloquence, and Gaius Marius, consul for seven times.
