Pietrabbondante: a charm of history and nature.

Physical geography

Territory

The town is located at 1027 m above sea level and offers a breathtaking view of the enormous rocks known as "Morge". The territory of Pietrabbondante ranges from 354 to 1215 meters above sea level, with a total elevation gain of 861 meters.

Climate

The climate could be described as semi-continental, with hot summers and cold winters with heavy snow. But don't worry, because Pietrabbondante is incredibly charming in every season.

Origins of the name

The name of the town is closely related to the stones and rocks that are found in large quantities in the area. However, according to some recent archaeological discoveries, it could also be related to the worship of the goddess of abundance. There is still much to discover about this mysterious place name.

History

Samnite period

Pietrabbondante is a place rich in history. In fact, the remains of Samnite fortifications on Mount Saraceno prove human presence in the area since ancient times. Here you can also find the remains of the ancient sanctuary and political center of the Samnites, including the Theater and the Italic temple of Pietrabbondante, dating back to the 2nd century BC.

Feudal period

During the feudal period, Pietrabbondante was the capital of the 34 counties that formed the duchy of Benevento. Later, the fief passed into the hands of various families, such as the Carafa, Cantelmo, Galluccio and D'Andrea. Until 1807 it was part of Abruzzo Citeriore, but then it was ceded to Molise.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Pietrabbondante is very suggestive and ancient. It is a shield with three Morge at the foot of which the town is located, topped by ears of wheat. In the middle, the letters B NTE, while in the lower part there are slightly rippled waters. This coat of arms is a rebus that solves the name of the town and represents abundance and reward for the work of farmers.

Conclusions

I hope you enjoyed this brief journey to Pietrabbondante. This town is very interesting and, if you have the opportunity, I recommend visiting it to admire its natural beauty, its history and its culture. Bon voyage!
