Physical geography
Territory
Chiauci is a town located among the mountains of Molise, not far from the Abruzzo border. The territory is characterized by lush and varied nature, with green hills, forests, and rivers that give it an enchanting appearance.
Hydrography
The Trigno River runs through the town of Chiauci and was dammed to create the Chiauci Dam, which was inaugurated in 2011. This water basin serves many municipalities not only in the Molise region but also in neighboring Abruzzo. Thanks to its rich water resources, the town of Chiauci hosts the Molise aqueduct, which provides drinking water to many families in the surrounding areas.
Climate
Chiauci has a typically Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot and dry summers and mild but rainy winters. The ideal time to visit these places is the spring or autumn when the temperature is mild but not too hot.
History
The history of Chiauci is based on agriculture and enthusiastic pastoralism that the city possesses. The municipality has feudal origins and, in the past, has been governed by several noble families, including the Sanfelice di Bagnoli del Trigno family. The name of the municipality has changed over the centuries, until it became the current Chiauci. In the nineteenth century, the municipality became autonomous and, although it has been merged with other municipalities over time, it is now an independent municipality again since 1970.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the municipality of Chiauci is a very important symbol for the locals. It represents the history and tradition of the municipality and is composed of an image of a castle with a tower, which symbolizes the ancient feudal origins of the municipality.
Monuments and places of interest
Chiauci is a hidden treasure of scenic beauty that offers numerous opportunities for tourist visits. One of the most important places to visit is the Parish Church of San Giovanni Apostolo ed Evangelista. This church dates back to the eighteenth century and is a reconstruction of an ancient temple damaged by earthquakes. Inside the church there are numerous statues of saints including St. Michael, St. Sebastian, and St. John in the "Stabat Mater" group. The facade of the church is very rustic but it can still be recognized as one of the oldest and most symbolic constructions of the municipality.
Moreover, Chiauci hosts the Chiauci Lake, one of the main water basins for the supply of water in the Trigno valley. Here you can relax admiring the beauty of the lake and its shores or take a walk in the park that surrounds it.
