Castelverrino

Welcome to Castelverrino: the story of Italy's smallest municipality

Castelverrino, known in Molise dialect as Castëllùccë, is an Italian municipality located in the province of Isernia. With only 97 inhabitants, it is not only the smallest municipality in the province, but also in Molise and the entire southern Italy. However, don't be fooled by its size: this municipality has an ancient and fascinating history.

Symbols

The municipality of Castelverrino has two official symbols: the coat of arms and the banner. The coat of arms depicts a red castle with three towers and a blue band running through the center, with a river at its feet. The banner, on the other hand, consists of a white cloth with golden embroidery and the municipality's logo in the center.

Castelverrino's society

Given its small size, Castelverrino's population has always been made up of a limited number of people. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, many families from the town emigrated to the United States in search of work, leaving the town with even fewer inhabitants.

Demographic evolution

As of April 30, 2022, the five least populated municipalities in Molise are Castelverrino, Provvidenti, San Biase, Castelpizzuto, and Molise, respectively. The municipality of Castelverrino currently has only 98 inhabitants, with a surface area of 6.15 km² and an altitude of 600 meters above sea level.

Administration

The municipality of Castelverrino was originally part of the Contado di Molise and later Molise itself. It was merged with the municipality of Poggio Sannita until it became an autonomous municipality in 1820, as established by Royal Decree No. 1876. Below is a table of the administrations that have succeeded each other in the municipality.

Notes

In conclusion, Castelverrino may be a small municipality, but its history and symbols demonstrate that it has been fundamental for the territory to which it belongs. Despite the fact that the Svogliati - the local glass-blowers who were once part of the town's tradition - have now disappeared, Castelverrino continues to be an interesting place to visit to discover most of Molise's hidden treasures.
