Poggio Sannita
Welcome to Poggio Sannita!
Welcome to Poggio Sannita, a town of 577 inhabitants located in the province of Isernia in Molise. Despite its small population, this town is full of history and breathtaking scenery.
Physical geography
Territory
Poggio Sannita is located on a rocky promontory bounded by the Verrino and Sente rivers. Both rivers are torrential in character, but the latter is completely dry during the summer. The town offers a spectacular view of the Verrino valley to the southeast and the Sente valley to the northwest, which marks the natural border with Abruzzo.
Topography
The current topography of the town is the result of a development from southwest to northeast, with the oldest part of the inhabited center located in the southern part of the city. From here, buildings have developed northeastward, following the shape of the sloping hillside on which the town has grown. The urban center thus has an elongated shape, with more recently built areas located in the northernmost part of the town. This area is called P.I.P. and is home to the town's industrial plants.
Origins of the name
The town of Poggio Sannita is peculiar in that it changed its name during its history. Initially, the town was called "Caccavone," a dialectal term that probably derived from the production of the caccavo, a kind of large copper pot used by farmers for the coagulation of milk. However, in 1921, the City council decided to change the name of the town, believing that the term "caccavone" could evoke laughter and ridicule from people. The name "Vinoli" was then chosen based on local typical products.
However, the new name was not considered sufficiently distinctive. Considering that the town falls within the historical-geographical region of ancient Sannio, with the proven presence of Samnite encampments on its territory and in relation to the position of the town located precisely on a hill, the City council decided to change its name again. On January 15, 1922, a Royal Decree established the new name of the town of Poggio Sannita. However, the old and beloved symbol of the town, the "caccavo," remains present in the emblems of local institutions and in the municipal banner.
Climatic and seismic classification
The climate of the town is classified as E, meaning a humid temperate climate with hot summers and mild winters. The seismic classification of Italy places it as a zone of medium seismic intensity.
