Hello everyone! I want to take you on a journey to discover Zavattarello, a small municipality located in the province of Pavia in Lombardy, Italy. With its 913 inhabitants, this village is a true treasure that honors the beauty of the region where it is located. Curious to learn more? Then, follow me on this trip!

Origin of the name

It is said that Zavattarello owes its name to the predominant activity carried out in the village for many centuries: that of shoemakers. In fact, in the local dialect, the town is called ''Savataré'', which means "the place where slippers (''savatte'') are made". What a beautiful story!

Zavattarello: a unique village between history and nature.

History

Zavattarello is an ancient fiefdom of the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio. Later, the locality becomes a personal fief of the Bishop who builds the castle there. In 1390, instead, the castle and the fiefdom pass into the hands of the Dal Verme counts, who will have control of it together with the County of Bobbio and Voghera, Borgonovo Val Tidone, Pianello Val Tidone, Castel San Giovanni, della val Tidone, and other fiefs.

Over the centuries, Zavattarello changes its territorial belonging several times, passing from the Kingdom of Sardinia to Napoleonic France, to then be annexed to Piedmont and then to Lombardy. Despite these changes, the village has always remained firm in its desire to maintain its roots and its history.

Chronology

The hilly area of Oltrepò pavese was a refuge for Roman army deserters following their defeat in the battle of the Trebbia by Hannibal. Zavattarello, on the other hand, is historically documented in the Bobbio papers of the 9th century as the Parish of San Paolo in Sartoriano (Giacomo Coperchini "ecological framework and historical interpretation of the Piacentino-Bobiense territory, 1988).

Attractions in Zavattarello

Another reason to visit this splendid village is the presence of the Castle of Zavattarello, which dominates the entire landscape. Built in the medieval period, it is one of the most beautiful examples of stone fortifications in Oltrepò Pavese and will surprise you with its wonders. Also, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, whose construction dates back to 1700, is one of the religious buildings worth a visit.

But that's not all: Zavattarello is also an ideal destination for those who love wine and food tourism, culture, and panoramas. Here you can taste the typical flavors of the territory thanks to the numerous farms in the area, choose from the numerous tourist activities such as panoramic walks, bike or hiking excursions, open-air picnics, and much more.
