Nibbiano

Welcome to Nibbiano

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Nibbiano, a hamlet of the Municipality of Alta Val Tidone, in the province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna. Nibbiano was an autonomous municipality until the merger with the municipalities of Caminata and Pecorara. Now, it is the municipal seat of the unified entity, Alta Val Tidone.

A unique location

Nibbiano is located in the middle of the Tidone valley, on the orographic left of the Tidone. Nibbiano occupies a large portion of the Tidone valley, at the western end of the province of Piacenza, on the border with the Oltrepò Pavese. The municipal territory ranges from the beginning of the hills of the Ligurian Apennines to the Po Valley, where the hamlet of Strà is located. The altitude ranges from 161 to 1,077 meters.

Nibbiano: history, nature and artificial lake in Trebecco.

An artificial lake in Trebecco

In the southern part of the municipal territory of Nibbiano, there is the lake of Trebecco, an artificial lake that emerged as a result of the construction for drinking water and hydroelectric power purposes. The long dam of the Tidone stream was built between 1921 and 1928. The lake of Trebecco takes its name from the hamlet of Trebecco, as at the time of the construction of the dam, most of the lake was part of the municipal territory of Trebecco, a municipality later suppressed and merged with Nibbiano.

The history of Nibbiano

Nibbiano was inhabited since prehistoric times. In Roman times, the area was called "Curte Neblani". Subsequently, the construction of various castles began. The castle of Nibbiano was mentioned for the first time in a deed of 1029, and those of Castello di Trebecco, Castello di Trevozzo, and Castello di Sala Mandelli.

During the Visconti period, Nibbiano exited the sphere of influence of the Bobbio abbey, passing under the control of the Malvicini Fontana family. In 1514, the castle of Trevozzo was heavily damaged during an attack by troops loyal to the Dal Verme. In the same year, Nibbiano was attacked by Genoese troops, but they were driven away from the area.

Subsequently, the territory of Nibbiano became part of the duchy of Parma and Piacenza, becoming the seat of a customs office near the border with the territory of Caminata. The border between Nibbiano and Caminata remained until the unification of Italy. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, most of the castles in the area were transformed into noble residences used during the summer period.

Conclusions

Here is a brief overview of Nibbiano. The area offers many opportunities for outdoor activities, from nature walks to water activities with the lake of Trebecco. The history of Nibbiano is fascinating, and the area has much to offer for those who want to discover more about this territory. If you have the opportunity to visit Nibbiano, you will not regret it!
