Remanzacco
Welcome to Remanzacco!
Hello everyone! Today I'm going to tell you about Remanzacco, a beautiful municipality in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. With its 6,080 inhabitants, this town is located just 14 km from the Udine Sud motorway exit, which connects to the A23 Palmanova-Tarvisio motorway. But let's discover more about its physical geography and history.
Physical geography
Remanzacco is located east of the provincial capital and in the central area of the Upper Friulian plain. The city is positioned on a well-travelled route that goes from Udine to Cividale via the road that passes through the center of the capital. The city, crossed by the Torre, Malina, and Grivò rivers, borders some other cities such as Udine to the west, Povoletto and Faedis to the north, Moimacco and Premariacco to the east, and Pradamano to the south.
History
The name Remanzasco derives from a Roman toponym in -acu related to the pre-Roman Celtic populations that inhabited the area. With the Romans, there was an economic growth, thanks to the improved road network and the centuriation of the countryside, the first transformation of the landscape of the Upper Friulian plain. In the Middle Ages, Remanzacco was part of the possessions of the Aquileian Patriarchate, which included it in the gastaldia of Cividale Friulian.
Remanzacco was mentioned in a document for the first time in 1192 and passed from the Patriarchs of Aquileia to the Republic of Venice in 1420. In 1321, the town was involved in a controversy over the definition of borders between the municipality and some lords of the neighboring areas.
In 1811, some fractions of Remanzacco historically linked to noble castle owners such as Ziracco and Orzano became part of its municipality thanks to the French reform of administration. In 1818, Cerneglons, linked to Udine, was added to the municipality. Remanzacco became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
Historical references
In 1883, the mayor and doctor of the town, Dr.Carlos Ferro, and the parish priest, Don Pietro Braidotti, founded the Forno Rurale to cope with the spread of pellagra. This social oven was inaugurated on January 1st, 1885 and was the second in Friuli after the one in Pasian di Prato.
Between 1884 and 1886, the Udine-Cividale railway line was built, which crosses Remanzacco. In 1938, there was a railway disaster on the railway line when the bridge over the Torre collapsed during the passage of a passenger train, causing the death of 18 passengers and three railway workers.
Conclusions
Remanzacco is a small city with a long history and an ideal geographical location. Its construction of a social oven to cope with the spread of pellagra and the inauguration of the Udine-Cividale railway line are important events in its history. If you visit Friuli-Venezia Giulia, I suggest you take a stop in Remanzacco, where you will surely be welcomed with open arms!
