Revere

Revere: a town with medieval charm

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Revere, a small municipality in Borgo Mantovano in the province of Mantua, which has about 2500 inhabitants and is located on the right bank of the Po River opposite Ostiglia.

Origin of the name and geographical location

The name Revere derives from the Latin "riperium", which means islet on the Po. The history of this town has ancient origins, in fact there were pre-Roman settlements already present in the area thanks to the proximity of the Po River.

Revere is located in the heart of the Po Valley at a height of only 16 meters above sea level.

The history of Revere

In past centuries, Revere was an island in the Po River, in fact the Great River did not have embankments and formed several islands in the marshy plain. The town was fortified in the 12th century, when the Modenese and Reggiani decided to build a fortress to collect tolls for the passage of goods, as Revere was a crossing point on the river.

Despite the fortification, the Mantovani conquered the fortress and took control of the city in 1163. From 1332 Revere became part of the territories of the Gonzaga family and in 1377 the powerful Mantuan family built a fortress as a decentralized seat of their administration. From 1444 to 1478 the Ducal Palace was built, which involved the transformation of the existing castle. The bell tower, located in front of the palace, is a testimony of a fortified system dating back to the 12th century which was part of the ancient fortress built in 1125.

The Gonzaga family had control of Revere until 1707, despite the moments of looting and difficulties that the area has experienced.

What to see in Revere

Revere is a town that has maintained its medieval charm, in fact it is possible to visit the Ducal Palace, the church of San Biagio, built in 1219 with an important Romanesque bell tower, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, located on the left bank of the Po River.

Merger with the municipalities of Pieve di Coriano and Villa Poma

Until 2017, Revere was an autonomous municipality, but subsequently merged into the new municipality together with Pieve di Coriano and Villa Poma, as a result of the Italian Municipal Merger.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Revere is a small town with medieval charm, which encapsulates the history of an ancient, fascinating and culturally rich land. A visit to Revere cannot fail to revalue and appreciate the history, nature and beauty of small towns like this, which convey a sense of tranquility and serenity, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities.
