Origins of the name
The name of Serravalle a Po may derive from its geographical position, which resembles a lock of a valley. Another hypothesis considers the etymology of Serravalle in lower Blenio in Canton Ticino, Switzerland, which derives from ''sara vallis'', a Longobard settlement for the administration of justice. Tradition then turned ''sara vallis'' into ''Serravalle'' with rhotacism. In any case, the base seems to be the word "sala" of the Lombard dialect.

In 1859, during the Second War of Independence, Serravalle a Po was occupied by the troops of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
