Welcome to Isolabona: a cozy village in Western Liguria

Isolabona, known in the Ligurian language as "L'Îsura", is a picturesque municipality located in the province of Imperia in Liguria. With only 687 inhabitants, it is a peaceful village nestled between the municipalities of Rocchetta Nervina and Dolceacqua, immersed in the Nervia Valley.

Physical geography

Isolabona is a characteristic fortified town in the western Ligurian hinterland. Its narrow and winding streets connect the two main squares, Piazza Piccola and Piazza Grande. On the second square overlook the oratory and the parish church, while the first one is adorned with a magnificent octagonal fountain dating back to 1486.

The peaks surrounding the territory of Isolabona include Mount Gouta, Mount Altomoro, Mount Morgi and Mount Olivastro, which reach heights between 700 and 1315 meters above sea level.

Origins of the name

The name "Isolabona" derives from two terms: "insula", which means islet due to the position of the village, which is surrounded by the Nervia river and its tributary, the Merdanzo; and "bona", which in Italian means "good". This term was added to indicate the fame of cordiality and hospitality of its inhabitants and for the mild climate present in the area.

History

The first known settlement in Isolabona - generically called "castellum" - dates back to the beginning of the thirteenth century and was probably located near the current urban cemetery, where the church of San Giovanni Battista is located.

In 1287, the territory of Apricale was purchased by Oberto Doria. From that moment on, the community of Isolabona (which gradually developed in the valley around the local castle) was united with that of Apricale within the Marchesato di Dolceacqua. This administrative union of the two villages lasted until 1573.

In 1524, the Marquisate of Dolceacqua passed to the Duchy of Savoy. With the annexation of Nice to the First French Republic in 1793, Isolabona became part of the canton of Perinaldo (district of Menton), then of the Principality of Monaco in the department of Alpes-Maritimes.

In 1805, the village was included in the canton of Dolceacqua with the new district of Sanremo, still within the department of Alpes-Maritimes. This changed again, when the First French Empire fell in 1815 and the village became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Later, Isolabona became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Symbols

The official coat of arms and the gonfalon were approved by a Decree of the President of the Republic dated August 16, 1952.
