Apricale
Apricale: a medieval village in the heart of Liguria
Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about a place I recently visited and that captured my heart with its medieval charm: Apricale, a village located in the valley of the Merdanzo stream, about 13 km from the coast of the Riviera di Ponente, in the province of Imperia in Liguria. With its 616 inhabitants, it is certainly not one of the largest cities in the region, but I assure you it has a lot to offer.
Physical geography
As I mentioned before, Apricale is located inland from Bordighera. The landscape is dominated by the beautiful Bignone mountain, 1,299 meters high, which stands in the background. Among the peaks of the municipal territory are the Gouta mountain, the Alto mountain, the Campi mountain, and many others. The village is surrounded by hills and woods that create a suggestive and unspoiled atmosphere.
History
Historical journey
The history of Apricale dates back to the Bronze Age, when the area was frequented by local populations. However, the city was officially founded in the 10th century by the Lascaris di Ventimiglia. Over the centuries, Apricale went through various dominations, including those of the Genoese nobles and the Doria, who included it in the Marchesato di Dolceacqua. In 1793, with the annexation of Nice to the First French Republic, Apricale was incorporated into the Canton of Perinaldo (District of Menton) and then into the Principality of Monaco.
With the advent of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Italy, the history of Apricale is linked to that of Liguria and the country.
What to see in Apricale
There are many places of interest and culture to visit in Apricale. One of the main ones is the Castle of the Lizard, dating back to the 10th century and then expanded by the Lascaris. It is located on the top of the city and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is also well known for its architecture and frescoes that can be admired there. The visit to the Theater of the Cough is also not to be missed, a small restored theater in 2007 and home to numerous cultural activities.
But the real treasure of Apricale is represented by its streets and alleys, which still preserve the medieval atmosphere. Walking through the narrow alleys and steep slopes, you will come across small squares, fountains, and houses with characteristic architecture. An evening stroll by candlelight can be an unforgettable experience!
Events in Apricale
Apricale is also known for its lively cultural and artistic life. Every year, in August, the International Festival of Sounds and Music of the World is held, which offers live music shows from all over the world. Other important events are the San Giuseppe Fair, in March, and the Santa Maria degli Angeli Fair, in September, both dedicated to typical local products.
Local cuisine
Finally, I cannot fail to mention the local cuisine of Apricale, which has nothing to envy to the nearby coast. There are many restaurants and trattorias that offer typical Ligurian dishes, such as focaccia, pesto pasta, rabbit with Ligurian style, and almond-based desserts. To be accompanied by a glass of fine white wine from the area.
In conclusion, Apricale is a place where you can breathe the history and culture of Liguria. A place that has preserved its medieval charm intact and that offers numerous opportunities for those who want to discover the beauty of the region. If you are in the area, do not miss the opportunity to visit this charming village.
