Castel Focognano
Welcome to Castel Focognano!
If you are looking for a place to spend your holidays in Tuscany, we recommend visiting the municipality of Castel Focognano! This beautiful municipality, with its 2951 inhabitants, is located in the province of Arezzo and is a perfect destination for those who want to discover the history, culture and beauty of Tuscany.
The History of Castel Focognano
Castel Focognano has a rich and fascinating history. The area was inhabited since ancient times by the Etruscans, as evidenced by the numerous monuments in the area. The name of the town of Rassina, the capital of the municipality, derives from the Etruscan word "Rassena".
The area also suffered the consequences of World War II, but became an important refuge for partisans and retreating soldiers. After the war, the city experienced remarkable economic development, thanks to the creation of important industries, including one dedicated to the extraction and processing of Calcium (metal). In 1992, a severe flood hit the municipality, causing much damage to the structures.
Socana: Testimonies of Etruscan, Roman and Christian Civilization
Among the attractions of Castel Focognano, we highlight the archaeological site of Socana. Here you can admire the traces of the three great civilizations that inhabited the area: the Etruscan, Roman and Christian. During the restoration work carried out between 1966 and 1972, traces of an Etruscan temple dedicated to Tinia and Minerva, an Etruscan altar and twenty antefixes with Minerva's head emerged.
At the site, three circular wheels of fetid stone decorated with words in the Etruscan language were also recovered. Above the Etruscan temple, three Christian churches dating back to the 5th, 7th and 10th centuries were built. The archaeological site of Socana is a clear testimony to the cultural and religious richness of the ancient Etruscan civilization.
Symbols of Castel Focognano
Even the symbols of Castel Focognano are very interesting. The coat of arms of the municipality, recognized in 1953, depicts a shield divided into four parts: in the first part, a black cross on a silver background represents the lineage of the Guidi counts. In the second part, a red tower represents the Focognano Castle. In the third part, a lion's head symbolizes strength and pride. Finally, in the fourth part, we find the emblem of the Municipality of Rassina, a copper bell on a green background.
The banner of the municipality shows the municipal coat of arms on a white background, with red and green decorations.
