Bellaria-Igea Marina
Greetings to Bellaria-Igea Marina
Hello friends! Today I'm taking you to discover Bellaria-Igea Marina, a resort located on the Romagna coast, in the province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna. The municipality has about 19,472 inhabitants and is characterized by a very interesting geographical and climatic territory, as well as a history that has ancient origins. Are you ready to join me in the discovery of Bellaria-Igea Marina?
Territory
The territory of Bellaria-Igea Marina extends along the Adriatic coast, right at the mouth of the Uso river. The municipal capital, Bellaria, is located on the left bank of the river, 14 km northwest of Rimini. The municipality covers an area of 17.19 km² and is bordered to the northeast by the Adriatic Sea, to the south by Rimini, and to the west by San Mauro Pascoli. The Uso river is very interesting from a naturalistic point of view and has undergone interventions that have improved the quality of the water.
Climate
Bellaria-Igea Marina is located in the extreme south of the Po Valley and its climate is influenced, albeit marginally, by the Po Valley area. However, positioned on the upper Adriatic, the resort has a climate that is halfway between the Mediterranean and the temperate continental climate: summers are very hot, with ventilated and low-rainfall currents, while winters are cold, exposed to the rigid Balkan currents and in some cases Siberian, which bring snow and ice, especially in the presence of the buran wind.
History
The toponym "Bellaria" first appears in a document from 1359. It was the name of a fortified farm, near the church of Santa Margherita, located at the mouth of the Uso river. In 1382, the farm was occupied by the Malatesta, who stayed there with Luigi I d'Angiò and his French army. In the late Middle Ages, the toponym "Bellaria" indicated a fortified place, which in Latin meant "things suitable for war". In 1412, instead, the resort hosted Pope Gregory XII.
Subsequently, the territory changed hands, including those of the Malatesta. Now, only the popular toponym of the place "e Castèl" remains of that history. Over the centuries, the area has also been attacked by Barbary pirates, which is why the Saracen tower was built, a lookout tower used to defend against these incursions. In the 19th century, a fishing village was born on the left bank of the river, which housed boats in the river.
In the early 20th century, Vittorio Belli named a holiday village, located in the maritime pine between the Uso stream and the "Torre Pedrera", after the goddess Igea, daughter of Asclepius. Later, "Marina" was associated with the name Igea, when summer colonies for children were installed in the southern area.
Conclusion
Here we are at the end of our journey to discover Bellaria-Igea Marina, a charming resort that combines history, culture, and natural beauty. Its geographical location on the Romagna coast makes it a very popular tourist destination, especially during the summer season, but the Mediterranean climate and the temperate continent also favor seasonal tourism throughout the year. We hope that this very brief journey has sparked your curiosity and made you want to visit this enchanting land.
Until next time!
