Santarcangelo di Romagna
Santarcangelo di Romagna: a city with ancient roots and a welcoming heart
If you're looking for a place to spend a vacation full of culture, history, and good food, Santarcangelo di Romagna is the place for you. This town in the province of Rimini offers a wide range of activities and attractions, starting from its geographical location, which extends between hills, rivers, and the sea.
Physical geography: between land and water
Santarcangelo di Romagna is located in the Emilia-Romagna region and is situated on the Strada Statale 9 Via Emilia, on the border with the province of Forlì-Cesena. It is bathed by the Uso and Marecchia rivers and extends around the Giove hill, about 90 meters above sea level. It is a strategic location that allows you to enjoy the Adriatic Sea just a few kilometers away, with the city of Rimini easily accessible.
History: from origins to noble families
The roots of Santarcangelo di Romagna date back to the Roman civilization, which had built the "via Emilia" here to connect Rimini to Piacenza. Later, the city was ruled by the noble families of the place, including the Balacchi, then ousted by the Malatesta. The latter held control of the city until 1462, when Pope Pius II took it from Sigismondo Malatesta and granted it to the Zampeschi and Pallavicino families.
Symbols and honors
The coat of arms and banner of Santarcangelo di Romagna were granted by a decree of the President of the Republic in 2004. The banner is a yellow and blue cut flag.
Monuments and places of interest: history and art in one city
Santarcangelo di Romagna has a lot to offer from a cultural and artistic point of view. Among the most important monuments of the city, we find religious architectures:
- the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, dating back to the 18th century, which houses a precious painting by Guido Cagnacci, a "Crocifisso" by Pietro da Rimini, and an organ by Gaetano Callido
- the Pieve di San Michele Arcangelo, the oldest church in the city (6th century), built in the Byzantine architecture style on the model of the Ravennati churches of Byzantine Ravenna. The latter presents very particular structural deformations to correct the errors of perspective vision.
But Santarcangelo di Romagna doesn't just offer historical and architectural treasures. This city is also famous for its food and wine: among the most famous specialties, we can mention passatelli in broth, stuffed piadina, and buffalo butter.
Furthermore, during the summer period, Santarcangelo di Romagna comes alive with numerous events and festivals, such as the Santarcangelo dei Teatri theater festival, held every year in July and featuring contemporary theater performances.
