We are therefore in a pleasant and sheltered position, ideal for enjoying the surrounding landscape. The territory develops between 130 and 330 meters above sea level, creating an interesting game of heights.
Origin of the name: here's the meaning of "Grumolo Pedemonte"
The name of the town, "Grumolo Pedemonte", has a very interesting meaning. Being located on a series of small hills (grumi) at the foot of the mountain, the name Grumolo Pedemonte means "a set of small hills at the foot of the mountain". A curiosity that testifies to the thousand-year history of our town.
The history of Grumolo Pedemonte
The first mention of the town dates back to 1262, but the area between the Bregonze Hills and the hills of Sarcedo was inhabited by shepherds already in the late Neolithic period, between the end of the IV and the beginning of the III millennium BC. Objects and ceramics belonging to the Bronze Age have been found in the area, while in Roman times a rustic villa and other structures were built along the Igna stream. In the Middle Ages, a fortified castle was founded on the homonymous hill.
During World War I, Grumolo Pedemonte also welcomed refugees from Chiuppano and Carrè, who were more exposed to the enemy.
Monuments and places of interest in Grumolo Pedemonte
The town boasts several monuments and places of interest. In particular, among the religious architectures stands out the Church of San Biagio, known as "the pearl of the Bregonze Hills". The small church, mentioned in the Rationes decimarum of 1297, was an ancient chapel of Santa Maria di Thiene, but at the end of the thirteenth century it was already listed as an autonomous parish of Grumolo and remained so until 1630. The building is known above all for the rich cycle of frescoes inside, dating back to the early fourteenth century, and for the famous "Polyptych of San Biagio", dated to the first half of the fifteenth century. In 2016, during a conservative restoration intervention, ceramic fragments from the medieval period and 24 rare coins, minted between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, were found under a tombstone that sealed two small rooms used as ossuary.
Another important religious monument is the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, dating back to 1442 and rebuilt in 1629. This church also has an ancient and interesting history: at the time of its construction, in fact, mass was celebrated here for the convenience of the faithful, while at San Biagio the cemetery and baptistery remained.
Finally, among the civil architectures, we cannot fail to mention the Old Villa Maddalena Lovisetto, built in the last decade of the eighteenth century by the family of the noble Angelo Vecchia. The villa, located on a beautiful panoramic hill, was built on a plot of land owned by the Monastery of San Bartolomeo in Vicenza.
