Tione di Trento: The Heart of the Giudicarie Valleys

Tione di Trento, or Tiòn in Trentino dialect, is a municipality in the autonomous province of Trento with a population of about 3,600 inhabitants. Known as the most important center of the Giudicarie Valleys, Tione has a millennial history and a great importance at the administrative, health and economic levels.

History

Until 1928, the municipality was called only Tione, but subsequently other territories were aggregated from the municipalities of Bolbeno, Saone and Zuclo. In 1952, some territories were detached for the reconstitution of the municipalities of Bolbeno and Zuclo. Tione was one of the "seven pievi of Giudicarie", which enjoyed a certain administrative autonomy under the dominion of the Prince-Bishop of Trento. In the Middle Ages, the area surrounding Tione suffered many barbarian invasions.

The village was almost completely destroyed by a great fire on August 21, 1895 that lasted more than a week. However, many of Tione's main churches and religious architectures remained intact.
