Stabello

Discovering Stabello!

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about Stabello, a charming hamlet in the municipality of Zogno in the province of Bergamo. Yes, the same city where Orio al Serio airport is located!

Stabello is a lovely place situated on the right side of the Brembana Valley, immersed in the Orobie Mountains. The distance from Bergamo is only 15 km and from Zogno, the municipality to which it belongs, only 2 km.

Etymology

But let's get to the curiosity of the name of this hamlet. Stabello derives from the Latin Stabulum which means stable, stable or sheepfold.

According to some scholars, the name would have evolved in this way: stabulu (loss of the last vowel already in ancient times) - stablu (disappearance of the atonic vowels, also quite ancient) - stabl (loss of final vowels different from 'a') - stàbel (introduction of an epenthetic vowel as in fure, coren, liber, etc.). An interesting curiosity, isn't it?

The Church of Santo Stefano

Stabello is famous for its parish church, the church of Santo Stefano. This church dates back to the fifteenth century and is very important for the local community. Not surprisingly, the residents of Stabello are actively involved in the activities of the church and participate in the liturgical celebrations.

Notes

Did you know that Stabello was an autonomous municipality until 1928? In fact, it was one of the smallest municipalities in the area, but since the merger with Zogno, it has been able to enjoy more services and infrastructure.

In general, if you are thinking of taking a trip to discover the province of Bergamo, do not forget to visit Stabello! This small hamlet will win you over with its traditions, nature, and hospitality of its people.
