Near Valgiungata, one can climb up to the Rastrello pass, which is located at 1047m above sea level. History
Zignago is a very ancient municipality that has origins dating back to prehistory. The toponym Zignago would probably derive from the dialect term ''Zignègu'', meaning inhabitant near water.
The Zignago area was a border zone between the Lombards and the Byzantine Empire. Later on, it became a feudal possession of the De Nobili di Vezzano, who built a castle. Zignago then passed to Pontremoli and became the property of the Fieschi of Lavagna.
In 1273, Zignago became part of the Republic of Genoa, taking it away from the dominion of the Malaspina family. In the sixteenth century, the Genoese republic elevated it to the title of Podesteria with a special magistrate appointed by the Genoese government. Zignago followed the fate of Genoa, including the Austrian invasion in 1747 and the French invasion of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797.
Under French domination, Zignago returned to the Vara department and later to the Kingdom of Sardinia. From 1859 to 1927, Zignago's territory was included in the IV mandamento of Sesta Godano in the Levante district, part of the province of Genoa before and, with the establishment in 1923, of the province of La Spezia.
