The etymology of the name Zevio

The name 'Zevio' does not have a clear etymological derivation. According to official historical records, the most likely hypothesis is that the original toponym was 'Jébetum' or 'Gébetum', which phonetically evolved into 'Gébitum, Gébeto', 'Gébeo' and finally, 'Zéveo'. The term's derivation could be from the Gepidi tribe, which settled here after Alboino's defeat.

The history of Zevio

Zevio is an ancient village. There are documents that speak of settlements already in the V century when Zevio was a place of defense for Verona. Later, thanks to the presence of the Gepidi who had settled there, Zevio became an increasingly large village. During its history, it experienced various foreign dominations along with the city of Verona.

Zevio has an important local church, since the X century, and numerous historical oratories and parishes. During the Scaliger era, Zevio saw the birth of Toscana di Zevio. Furthermore, in the same Scaliger fraction, the humanist Girolamo Avanzi was born, the author of a Sapphic ode in Latin in honor of the Saint. Historical documents also attest to the active presence of local confraternities, of which traces are still preserved in the parishes and local oratories.
