Zero Branco

Zero Branco: the city and its territory

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Zero Branco, a Venetian municipality located in the province of Treviso. With its 11,584 inhabitants, Zero Branco is located in a flat area full of waterways. The Zero river passes through the main square of the town, and soon after joins its tributary, the Vernise.

Origin of the name, according to different hypotheses

But where does the name Zero Branco come from? According to different hypotheses, the name Zero could refer to an ancient landowner. Alternatively, it could derive from "theatru", indicating a place where a theatre once existed. Finally, there is also the hypothesis that identifies it as a phytonym derived from Quercus cerris. Branco, on the other hand, should mean "branching" and probably refers to a ditch or canal.

History of Zero Branco

The history of Zero Branco dates back to prehistoric times when the area was inhabited by the paleovenetic population. Later, in the 2nd century BC, it was invaded by the Romans and put under the municipium of Altino. In the 12th century, it was annexed to the medieval municipality of Treviso.

Subsequently, between 1312 and 1388, it passed under the control of the Scaligeri family and then the Serenissima. Under Venice, the various rural municipalities that made up the area were maintained, and Zero Branco was chosen as a summer residence by Venetian nobles.

In 1797, the territory came under Austrian rule, interrupted only by the Napoleonic period between 1805 and 1814. Zero Branco became an independent municipality and was included in the canton of Noale in the Bacchiglione department, with the capital being Vicenza.
