The origins of the name of Zenson di Piave

The toponym Zenson di Piave is attested for the first time in 1214 as "Zensono". The origin of the name is uncertain and there are several hypotheses. According to some scholars, the name would derive from a Latin or Venetic personal name. Others link it to the Venetian family Zen, which had properties in the area, or to the bishop of Verona, Saint Zeno.

The history of Zenson di Piave

The first traces of human presence in the territory of Zenson di Piave date back to the second millennium BC. In the medieval era, the territory was favored by Benedictine monks who built the parish church of San Benedetto. However, the Benedictine monks and the Archbishop of Treviso contested possession of the territory for many years.

During the wars between the Republic of Venice and Otto II of Saxony, watchtowers were built in the area, including one in Zenson di Piave. The tower could correspond to the fortress of Cigoto, built during the barbarian invasion. The fortress was destroyed before 1580.

In 1717, the village passed under the jurisdiction of the Benedictine monks of San Giorgio Maggiore Monastery in Venice. With the Napoleonic suppression of monasteries, jurisdiction passed to the episcopal authority of Treviso.

During World War I, Zenson di Piave was located along the Piave front and was the scene of important battles between the Italian army and the Austro-Hungarian army.

Despite being a small municipality, it has played an important role in the history of the area and the country.
