Zelo Buon Persico

Welcome to Zelo Buon Persico: History and Identity of a Lombard Municipality

Zelo Buon Persico is a municipality in the province of Lodi, located in the Lombardy region. With a population of approximately 7,378 inhabitants, Zelo Buon Persico has ancient roots dating back to Roman times.

History

The name Zelo comes from the Latin expression agellum, which means "small field". It is believed that the farm in question belonged to Gomperto, from whom the suffix "Buon Persico" derives. The full name, "agellum Gomperticum" (i.e. "Gomperto's small farm"), was due to the location of the farm, located between two large Roman properties.

Over time, the name changed to Gello, Zello, and finally Zelo, while the attribute "Buon Persico" was added to the name of the town. The "via Regina", a Roman road that connected the river port of Cremona with Chiavenna passing through Milan, crossed the town in Roman times.

Zelo Buon Persico was transferred to the Thurn und Taxis princes of the Holy Roman Empire in 1546 and remained under their control until the extinction of fiefs in 1782. During the Napoleonic age, Zelo Buon Persico was added to Bisnate and Casolate, which then became autonomous with the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom. Bisnate was then definitively added in 1841. In 1869, the municipalities of Casolate, Mignete, and Villa Pompeiana were added to Zelo Buon Persico.
