Zanica

Welcome to Zanica: history, geography, and folklore

Hello friends! Today I will talk to you about Zanica, an Italian municipality located in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. The town has about 8,680 inhabitants and is located south of the provincial capital.

Physical geography

The territory of Zanica extends over a flat area, characterized by a slight slope towards the south and west. The municipality includes the hamlets of Capannelle and Padergnone and is bordered by seven neighboring municipalities, including Azzano San Paolo and Stezzano. The Morla river crosses through the town, but the main river that has facilitated agricultural development is the Serio. Thanks to its canalization, farmers have been able to exploit new fields, increasing cultivable territories.

Zanica: geography, history, and Bergamo's folklore.

History and folklore

The history of Zanica dates back to the Lombard period, as evidenced by the will of Taidone in 774. The town has a strong agricultural tradition, evidenced by the presence of numerous farmhouses. However, Zanica is also known to be the hometown of "Gioppino," the most famous mask from Bergamo.

Etymology

The first official document in which Zanica is mentioned dates back to the 9th century when the town was called "Vetianica." It is believed that the name derives from the Roman patrician Vettius, owner of the fields of "Prata Vettianica." Over the centuries, the name underwent several transformations, taking on the names of "Veczaneca," "Vecianica," and "Vesanica" before becoming "Zanica."

In short, Zanica is a place rich in history and charm, where agricultural tradition merges with popular culture. If you find yourself near Bergamo, I recommend a visit to Zanica, you won't regret it!
