Villamagna

Villamagna: a hamlet of Volterra

Hi everyone! Today I'm going to talk about Villamagna, a lovely hamlet of the municipality of Volterra, in the province of Pisa, Tuscany.

Physical geography

To get to Villamagna you have to go northwest from the municipal center, crossing the Capriggine stream that flows into the Era near Molino d'Era. The village is located about 15km from Volterra and a little over 60km from Pisa.

Villamagna: history and monuments of a Tuscan hamlet

History

Villamagna has an ancient history, dating back to 780. In that year, a Lombard merchant, originally from the hamlet but residing in Pisa, donated some of his property to the monastery of San Pietro in Palazzuolo di Monteverdi Marittimo. In 1199, the rule of the Cavalcanti over the castle and the hamlet ended, because the municipality of Volterra forced them to surrender them. In 1530, the hamlet was looted by the Florentine militias commanded by Alessandro Vitelli and also suffered a serious bubonic plague epidemic.
