Voltago Agordino

Discovering Voltago Agordino

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Voltago Agordino, a small town located in the province of Belluno in Veneto, with a population of about 811 inhabitants. Its history is linked to that of the Agordino and the province of Belluno, dating back to before 1146 when it was mentioned for the first time as "Vico Woltagi".

The history of Voltago Agordino

The name seems to derive from the German personal name Walt and already at this time the settlements were organized in a rural community of Voltago, Digoman, Miona and Frassenè, governed by a meriga and other representatives elected by the heads of families. Feudal power belonged to the family of Voltago, who lived in a castle located on the banks of the Sarzana stream and who had considerable power in the area.

During the Venetian era, Voltago was included among the towns of the Capitaniato of Agordo and was part of the Belluno area. After the Unification of Italy, the municipality was included in the province of Belluno and was finally established during the Napoleonic era.

Voltago Agordino: history, monuments, and places of interest.

Monuments and places of interest

Voltago Agordino is a municipality that offers several attractions for its visitors. One of the most beautiful places is the Parish Church of Voltago, dedicated to Saints Victor and Corona. This is one of the oldest churches in the Agordino and was built in 1664-1667 by Antonio q. Marco and Pier Antonio Romeli, master masons of Fonzaso. With its gabled façade and pointed roofs, the church features typical lines of Alpine architecture. However, the Greek cross plan is a touch of originality.

Inside the church, you can admire a valuable altarpiece by Francesco Frigimelica the Elder from 1642, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints Victor, Corona, and Joseph. The flag bearing Saint Victor has the coat of arms of the family of Voltago. The main altar has a wooden ancona by Fioravante Costa from 1687, with cherubs, little angels, and floral motifs. The decorated wooden choir is the work of Giacomo Fossen and Antonio Agnolet (1754) and the Madonna of the Belt with Saints Augustine and Monica and the souls in purgatory, attributed to Pietro Ricchi, is on the right wall.

In the right chapel, you will find a wooden altar with the Trinity in the center with Saints Osvaldo, Valentino, and Lucano, a painting by Giovanni Pante (1689). The left chapel of the current church was obtained from the presbytery of the original building dating back to 1388.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Voltago Agordino is a beautiful town rich in history that deserves to be visited. The Church of Saint Victor and Corona is one of the places of greatest interest. The city has much to offer for lovers of art and Alpine architecture. I recommend visiting the municipality during the summer, when you can take long walks and excursions in the area. I hope my article has piqued your curiosity and made you want to visit this little paradise in Veneto.
