Welcome to Volpiano!

Hello everyone! Today we're talking about a beautiful town in Piedmont: Volpiano. This town has about 15,000 inhabitants and is located in the metropolitan city of Turin. It is an industrial and agricultural center that extends on the plateau of the Natural Reserve of Vauda. It is crossed by various watercourses, from the Malone and Bendola streams to the San Giovanni and Ritano creeks, and is only 3 km from the hamlet of Cascine Malone.

The history of the name of Volpiano

Do you want to know the origin of this town's name? According to the research of Giandomenico Serra, the toponym comes from the gentilic Ulpius, dating back to the Roman era. But there are also other interesting hypotheses. In fact, some argue that the first part of the name derives from the Piedmontese word "Vàuda," from the Celtic "Vald," meaning "forest." Therefore, the meaning of the name would be "The plain of Vauda." In Piedmontese dialect, the town is called "Volpian" or "Vorpian."

The history of Volpiano

Volpiano has a long history that dates back to the Roman era. The area was inhabited by the Salasses and Taurini, and became part of the Roman Empire in 25 BC. During the process of Romanization, Volpiano was affected by centuriation and was crossed by the Roman roads that connected Augusta Taurinorum to Eporedia and Augusta Praetoria. In the 5th and 6th centuries, it underwent barbarian invasions and was subdued by the Lombards.

In 771 AD, Charlemagne waged war against the Lombards, initiating the process of European reunification that led to the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire. Around the year one thousand, Volpiano was part of the fief of Roberto, a nobleman of Swabian origin, husband of Perinzia, also noble, perhaps from the family of Arduino or that of the previous lords of Ivrea, the Anscarici, of Burgundian origin.
