Volpedo, hidden gem of Piedmont

Origin of the name

The name of this delightful village derives from the Latin word "Viculus", meaning a village. Volpedo was, in fact, a Roman village that existed in this location since ancient times.

History

Volpedo has a rich and interesting history. The first written mention of the village dates back to the 10th century. Since then, the village has seen many historical events, from the passage of ancient Rome, to the donation to the Emperor Otto II of Saxony in 979. Later, the village came under the control of the Visconti family and then became a fiefdom of the condottiero Perino da Tortona. Over the centuries, the village has witnessed many historical events and in 1513, they lost the castle walls as punishment for a fire caused by the Guelphs. However, the village was able to rebuild itself and today it presents itself with its colors and architecture as a jewel of local art.

The landscape of Volpedo

Volpedo is famous for fruit-growing and the cultivation of Prunus Persica. Moreover, the view from the surrounding hills is a priceless spectacle. Inside the village, there is also the Pellizza da Volpedo Museum, dedicated to the famous painter born right here.

Most beautiful villages in Italy

Volpedo has been included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a club that collects Italian villages that stand out for their beauty, history, and tradition. This list was created by the Tourism Council of the Italian Association of Municipalities and makes us understand how Volpedo is a real gem of our country.
