Volongo

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about Volongo, an Italian municipality located in the province of Cremona, in Lombardy. Along with Ostiano, it is one of the two municipalities in the province of Cremona that extends north of the Oglio River. Today I will talk to you about the physical geography of Volongo, its hydrographic characteristics, its origins, and its history. I will also give you an idea of what are the places of interest in the municipality.

Physical geography

The territory of Volongo is predominantly agricultural plains. In the past, the cultivation of linum usitatissimum and Oryza sativa was very important thanks to the presence of two nearby rivers and the canals deriving from them. There was also a secondary cultivation of mulberry for the breeding of Bombyx mori. Today, the territory of Volongo is part of the Parco dell'Oglio Sud, a regionally protected area.

Hydrography

The town center to the east is surrounded by the Gambara River. The latter flows into the Oglio a little further south, which marks the border of the municipal territory with Pessina Cremonese.

Volongo: History, Geography, and Attractions

Origins of the name

Some hypotheses regarding the origin of the name Volongo suggest that it has to do with the swampy and marshy environment of the area. One idea is that the name derives from an ancient "Vadum Longum", which means long ford, generated by the river bed of the long river, which in this case is the Gambara River.

History

Volongo has a rich history dating back to Roman times, with the presence of an important military garrison. In 1000 AD, the settlement was included in the reclamation campaign of the Po Valley and became part of the orbit of the Abbey of Leno. Subsequently, the territory was governed by Pandolfo Malatesta and then by the Duchy of Milan under the Visconti family. When the Marquisate of Mantua expanded, Volongo became part of the Gonzaga domains until 1707.

In the 19th century, two pioneers of early childhood education and pedagogy, the Agazzi sisters, were born in Volongo. In their memory, the Agazziana municipal nursery school was built in 1950.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the flag of the municipality were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2010. The flag is blue.

Monuments and places of interest

The main place of interest in Volongo is the church of Saints Peter and Paul. The building dates back to the mid-1500s but has been modified over the centuries.

In summary, Volongo is an Italian municipality with a rich history and is included in the Parco dell'Oglio Sud. Its area is predominantly agricultural and the territory is rich in rivers and canals. The municipality has been governed over the centuries by various important figures. Finally, among its places of interest is the church of Saints Peter and Paul. I hope I have told you something interesting about Volongo, a small municipality in northern Italy's Lombardy region.
