History

The history of Vivaro Romano begins with the Equi in the 3rd century BC, to become part of the Roman Empire. The toponym "Vivaro" derives from the Latin "vivarium", which indicated the livestock breeding nursery. It then followed the vicissitudes of the Duchy of Spoleto until it belonged to the Abbey of Farfa. Over the centuries, the town fell under the influence of several lordships, including the Orsini, Brancaleone, Cenci, Vitelli and Ceuli. The construction of the castle began in 1440 under the Orsini, but was destroyed by the French in 1799. During the Risorgimento, Vivaro sided for Unity and welcomed Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Symbols

The municipality's pennant is a green drapery with a yellow border. The coat of arms features the dog rose, a typical flower of the area, and the image of a viper, mistakenly connected to the origin of the town's name.

Monuments and places of interest

The town boasts a parish church dedicated to St. Blaise and a Sanctuary of Santa Maria Illuminata, located on the Santa Maria Hill 3 km from the town. Its foundation is uncertain, but the first citation dates back to a bull of Urban VI in 1282.

Conclusions

Vivaro Romano is a hidden gem, ideal for lovers of history and the Italian countryside. If you want to take a different path from the usual tourist routes, you cannot miss a trip to this suggestive municipality.
