History

Origins

Turin has a two-millennia history. It was probably founded near the current location, around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BC.

The Duchy of Turin

After the Ostrogothic rule, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, and then passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563 it was declared the capital of the Duchy of Savoy.

The Capital of the Kingdom

Since 1720, Turin became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861), a state that in the 19th century would lead to the Risorgimento and that made Turin the first Capital of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946).

Culture and Attractions

Turin is one of the major university, artistic, tourist, scientific, and cultural centers of Italy. Turin is the third largest economy-industrial production complex in the country, along with Milan and Genoa. The city is the heart of the Italian automotive industry and hosts the headquarters of important companies such as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the Stellantis Group. In addition, it is an important center for publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, the aerospace sector, industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Events

Turin hosts many important events throughout the year, such as the International Exhibition of 1911 and the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006. Since 2021 (until at least 2025), the city is also the venue for the ATP Finals. Recently, Turin hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, a major international music event.
