The history of Vitorchiano

The history of Vitorchiano dates back to the Bronze Age, as demonstrated by findings from the end of the last century. Vitorchiano was perhaps occupied in Etruscan times and was subsequently a Roman castrum and fortified urban center in the southernmost part of "Tuscia Longobardorum". Vitorchiano had a centuries-old history influenced for a long time by the expansionist policy of the neighboring and powerful Viterbo.

The Faithful of Vitorchiano

In 1199 Vitorchiano declared itself free from any ties with Viterbo and was besieged by Viterbo's militias, but thanks to Rome's help, in 1201 the town was liberated from the siege and became a feud of Rome. In 1232, the Viterbesi seized the town again and devastated it, but the Annibaldi fortified the village with new walls that made Vitorchiano practically impregnable. However, the Vitorchianesi could not bear his rule and in 1267 they provided at their own expense to buy back the country from Giovanni Annibaldi. When it became evident to the Roman Senate that Vitorchiano was lost due to short-sighted policy, the Vitorchianesi made a solemn act of submission to Rome.
