Origins of the name
Did you know that the name Viticuso derives from the Latin "Lacus Verticibus Clausus"? Yes, indeed! The town was well known for the lake enclosed by the mountains.
History
The origin of Viticuso is very ancient, dating back to the Samnite Wars. During the Middle Ages, the town played an important role in the routes connecting Molise to the Abbey of Montecassino, so much so that in the toponymy of the town and in the medieval ruins of the characteristic Norman old town, you can still see the main castle gate towards Molise and the corresponding "access" towards Cassino.
The town has undergone various dominations, until the end of the Second World War, during which the historic center of the town was destroyed by bombing, saving only the square where the German command was located.

The town's coat of arms depicts a green tree on a golden background at the top of a mountain.
