Welcome to Viterbo: the city of the Popes

Welcome to Viterbo, a city with ancient Etruscan origins and home to important historical events.

A city with a mountainous territory

Viterbo ranks second among the municipalities in Lazio for surface area. It is located on a large plateau on the northern slopes of Mount Palanzana, belonging to the Monti Cimini. The city is crossed by the Fosso Urcionio and is only a few kilometers away from the Maremma Laziale plain.

The climate of the area falls within the classification D, with good temperature fluctuations between summer and winter.

Viterbo: history, art, and relaxation amidst the mountains.

History of the city

The etymology of the name Viterbo remains uncertain to this day, but it is believed to derive from the Latin "Vetus Urbs", meaning "Old City".

Traces of Neolithic and Copper Age settlements have been found in the territory of Viterbo, but there are few Etruscan presences.

During the Roman period, a military settlement called "Castrum Herculis" was established, devotion to the temple of Hercules in the area. Later, the city became a papal seat and for 24 years the Popes' Palace hosted various pontiffs.

A well-preserved medieval old town

The historic center of Viterbo contains treasures of art and culture. The San Pellegrino district has been particularly well preserved and the city walls are intact.

The fantasies of the erudite Annio da Viterbo in the 15th century have supposed that here there arose an Etruscan tetrapolis which instead would be an acronym of four small towns: Fanum, Arbanum, Vetulonia and Longula.

Spas and university

Viterbo is famous for its spas and hosts the University of Tuscia, known for the excellence of its degree programs.

The spas are a true paradise for relaxation and health: the waters are rich in beneficial properties and the territory offers a beautiful panoramic view.

Conclusions

Viterbo is truly the ideal city for lovers of art, culture and nature. Its mountainous territory and its geographical location make Viterbo a unique and enchanting experience. Come discover all the wonders that the city of the Popes has to offer.
