A journey through the history and geography of the Municipality of Visco

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about a small municipality in Italy called Visco, located in the Bassa friulana. This village has around 814 inhabitants and is located approximately 25 km from Udine, 30 km from Gorizia, and 50 km from Trieste.

A bit of history

The town of Visco has Roman origins and in the Middle Ages it was part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. In 1526 it passed to Austria and from here on its history has been closely linked to the historical events of Italy and Austria. Until 1918, Visco was an important border point between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy, Palmanova, the neighboring municipality, was already part of the Kingdom of Italy. During the First World War, a military hospital was founded in Visco, which later, during the Second World War, was used to house Yugoslav civilian prisoners.

Monuments and places of interest

Visco is a very interesting place to visit, especially for its beautiful Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, dedicated to the Madonna of the Snow. Built in 1685, the church has a simple gable facade, but inside there are truly spectacular works of art such as the dramatic main altar painted between 1738 and 1750 by Paulino Zuliani, adorned with statues depicting saints Peter and John and a painting attributed to Palma il Giovane.

Linguistic curiosities

In Visco, the Friulian language is spoken, a regional Italian language. According to Resolution No. 2680 of August 3, 2001, by the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Municipality is included in the Italian municipalities where the Friulian language is spoken for the purposes of applying Law 482/99, Regional Law 15/96 and Regional Law 29/2007. The Friulian language spoken in Visco belongs to the central-eastern variant.

Conclusion

In short, despite being a small town, Visco has a history and artistic and cultural heritage that is worth discovering. If you like discovering new places and are passionate about history and art, then this Municipality could be an interesting destination for you!
