Virle Piemonte

Virle Piemonte: an ancient village hidden in the heart of Piedmont

Physical geography

Virle Piemonte, or simply Virle, is a tiny Italian municipality located in the province of Turin, in Piedmont. With a population of only 1152 inhabitants, Virle is situated about 30 kilometers south of Turin, on the right bank of the Lemina stream. The geographical location of Virle suggests that it was once overrun by swamps and forests, but thanks to the help of monks from the Order of St. Benedict who arrived from Susa, the region - particularly the one bordering Pancalieri - was reclaimed and the unhealthy lands were turned into meadows and cultivable fields, becoming a source of life for the villagers.

Origin of the name

The origin of the name Virle is uncertain and could come from different sources. According to an inscription found in the San Paolo region, the ancient name of the city was Irla, later becoming Virle, probably in reference to the Irla family of Roman origin, who may have founded the village. Another document suggests that Virle could come from Virguletta, or places planted with small twigs used for tying vines and the like.

Monuments and places of interest

Despite its small size, Virle preserves some artistic and historical treasures. Among these, one can admire the castle of the Marquises of Romagnano, surrounded by moats and walls until 1626. However, these were probably demolished in 1630 by French troops who camped in Virle, near the farm and the Church of San Paolo.

History

The first houses were built in the region of the town called Podi, bordering Pancalieri because the area was higher than the others.

The territory of Virle was recognized as a fiefdom from 1001 onwards and was donated to various feudal lords, such as the Marquises Olderico Manfredi II and Bosone and Guidone, sons of Arduino I d'Ivrea. In 1163 the fief passed to the Marquises of Romagnano, whose descent sold one fifth to Prince Philip I of Savoy-Acaia, who in 1307 sold the land to Giorgio Asinari, Lord of Camerano.

Curiosities

The history of Virle Piemonte dates back to Roman times. In those distant times, the city was probably called Virguletta and the village dates back to 400 AD. According to some, Virle is one of the many towns in northern Italy that still preserves the original appearance of ancient Roman cities today.

In any case, Virle is a hidden gem of Piedmont, where history and nature blend together to create a picture-perfect dream.
