Vinci: the municipality of Leonardo da Vinci

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about a beautiful Tuscan municipality, Vinci. This place is known primarily for being the birthplace of the famous artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. Vinci is located in the heart of Tuscany, in the metropolitan city of Florence. With its 14,548 inhabitants, Vinci offers tourists and visitors many attractions to discover. Let's find out together!

Physical geography

Vinci is located on the slopes of Montalbano, a hilly massif rich in vineyards, olive groves, and terraces supported by characteristic dry stone walls. The oldest part of the municipality has an almond-shaped plant, which looks like a two-masted boat when viewed from above. For this reason, the historic center of the village is also called "Castel della Nave".

History

Vinci has a very interesting history. During the plebiscites for the unification of Tuscany with the Kingdom of Sardinia, the "yes" did not obtain the majority of eligible voters, with a record abstention, a symptom of opposition to unification. During World War II, Vinci was occupied by the Nazis but was later liberated by British troops after long fighting with the Germans. Because of its historical importance, Vinci obtained the title of city with a decree by the President of the Italian Republic Luigi Einaudi in 1954.

Monuments and places of interest

Vinci is rich in places of interest to visit. Let's start with religious architectures. The municipality is part of the diocese of Pistoia and hosts several churches, including the Church of Santa Croce and the Shrine of the Annunciation. In the surroundings of Vinci, you can visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Faltognano, the Oratory of the Erta, and the Church of Santa Maria in Petroio, just to name a few.

If you love art and culture, you must not miss the civil architectures, such as the Leonardian Library and the Ideal Museum. In addition, you can visit the Villa del Ferrale in Anchiano, where Leonardo da Vinci was born, and the Villa di Mercatale. If you like open spaces and greenery, you can take a walk to Villa Dianella Fucini or Villa Vignozzi.

Leonardo's Birthplace

For history and Leonardo da Vinci enthusiasts, a visit to his birthplace is a must. The house is located in the locality of Anchiano, a short distance from Vinci, and is open to visitors. This is an unmissable stop to discover more about the life and works of one of the greatest geniuses in human history.

Military architectures and other attractions

Vinci also hosts several military architectures, such as the Castle of the Guidi Counts, which has a spectacular panoramic view of the valley below. Don't miss the Man of Vinci, a wooden sculpture by Mario Ceroli that refers to Leonardo's famous Vitruvian drawing. Finally, I recommend a visit to Piazza dei Guidi, requalified in 2006 with a contemporary art intervention that includes sculptures engraved with glass tesserae and silver blades, creating a surprising scenographic effect at night.

In conclusion, Vinci is a Tuscan municipality that deserves a visit. With its history, churches, civil and military architectures, and Leonardo da Vinci's birthplace, there are many attractions for all tastes. So, what are you waiting for? Take your car or train and discover this hidden gem of Tuscany!
