The history of the municipality of Vinchiaturo

The town was already active in 1000 as a dependency of the Santa Maria di Monteverde monastery. However, in 1349, an earthquake forced it to be rebuilt downstream. Over the centuries, Vinchiaturo suffered several natural disasters, including the earthquake of 1805, which destroyed most of the town but at the same time gave the opportunity to rebuild it in Umbertine style.

The coat of arms of the municipality was recognized by decree of the head of government on March 18, 1936. The gonfalone is a red banner with a blue pole, granted by royal decree on August 7, 1938.

One of the oldest attractions of the town is the Santa Maria di Monteverde Monastery, located on the homonymous mountain. Today it is a deconsecrated church that is used for tourist visits.

The Church of Santa Croce is medieval in style, with a basilica plant and three naves. The facade, from the 15th century, was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1349. After the Molise earthquake of 1805, the facade was renovated in Neoclassical style in 1840. The octagonal bell tower is an example of Puglian Romanesque style. Inside there is a 13th century crucifix and a 1775 organ.

The Church of Santa Maria delle Macchie is another place of great historical interest, built in the 15th century. The church has a Romanesque style and inside there are ancient frescoes that make it even more attractive.
