History

Bolognola is a municipality rich in history and legends. The most famous legend suggests that the village was founded in the 14th century by three nobles from Bologna who were fleeing from the fights between Guelfs and Ghibellines. In reality, historical studies demonstrate that a populated nucleus already existed in this area well before the 13th century, and the toponymy has nothing to do with the city of Bologna.

The village then became a medieval commune and was influenced by the Varano family, lords of Camerino, who built a castle there, now reduced to a few ruins.

In the first half of the 20th century, the population began to decline due to the fall of two large avalanches, which caused many deaths among the residents and damaging many of the oldest buildings.
