History

Middle Ages

In 1210, the German Emperor Otto IV of Brunswick first referred to Villanova Mondovì, which at the time was located in the locality called "San Nicolao". The village was ruled by the Lords of Morozzo and was characterized by a church with the same name. Over time, however, the Ellero river changed its course, destroying the ancient parish church. A chapel with the same name was built, but it too was destroyed by the flood of 1300. The inhabitants moved to the hill of Villavecchia, where they already found a church dedicated to Santa Caterina and a convent of nuns. Villanova Mondovì was also important thanks to its strong Castle and was surrounded by walls, in 1369, and equipped with a Fortress called Bastita. Access was through three gates equipped with drawbridges.

From 1500 to the Unification of Italy

Over time, Villanova was besieged several times, in 1540 and 1372. While the nearby city of Mondovì fell into French hands, Villanova resisted with "admirable steadfastness". In 1544, the Duke of Savoy rewarded the loyalty of the Villanovese and made the town "autonomous and independent of Mondovì". The sanctuary of Santa Maria del Bosco dates back to the seventeenth century, while the church of San Lorenzo, in the hamlet of Garavagna, dates back to the thirteenth century. The parish church of Villanova is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and was rebuilt in the eighteenth century.
