History
Villanova del Sillaro has ancient origins. In fact, for centuries it was known as "Villa Nuova". Before becoming a municipality, the territory was under the control of the Rho family, a noble family from Lodigiani and Milanese. In 1488, the Rho family ceded their rights to the city to the Olivetan Abbey, founded in 1428 by Nicolò Sommariva. The Abbey, dedicated to the patron saints of the two brothers (Nicola and Angelo) was one of the main ones in the diocese, the second for income in the seventeenth century, with a rich library and furnishings.
In the eighteenth century, a grandiose reconstruction in late Baroque style was started but was interrupted by the suppression in 1797 by the revolutionary French who had occupied the State of Milan. The fifteenth-century church (now parish) and part of the nearby Abbaziale Palace remain.
In 1863, the name of the municipality was officially changed to "Villanova del Sillaro".
Symbols
The municipal coat of arms and flag were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on June 14, 1953. The flag is a white flag with two blue stripes.
