Located in the Agrigento municipality, in Sicily, this town has 1337 inhabitants and was founded in 1499 by Prince Antonio Alliata thanks to the "licentia populandi" issued by the Viceroy Giovanni La Nuzza.
History and Festivities
Villafranca was inhabited by a colony of workers from Salaparuta and was enriched over time by Baroque peculiarities. The historical and artistic assets that the city preserves intact are the result of the generosity and love for art of the Alliata family. The patronal feast is on May 31 and is celebrated in honor of Maria SS. Del Mirto at the conclusion of the Marian month, while the main feast is celebrated in the first week of August with the miraculous painting of Madonna del Mirto and the simulacra of San Michele Arcangelo and San Giovanni Battista.

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Villafranca Sicula was recognized by decree of the Prime Minister Secretary of State of the and the gonfalon, granted with D.P.R. of July 18, 2006, consists of a banner parted of red and yellow.

The population of Villafranca Sicula is constantly growing and enjoys a high quality of life. The Municipality received an important recognition in 2011 as "Comune Riciclone" for wood, awarding Villafranca Sicula as the first southern Italian town for wood recycling.
