Villadose

Discovering Villadose: Physical Geography

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Villadose, a beautiful Italian municipality located in the province of Rovigo, in Veneto. Villadose has a population of around 4765 inhabitants and is located east of the city of Rovigo, in the central part of Polesine. The territory is crossed by the Naviglio Adigetto river, which divides the municipality into two sectors. In addition, there are the drainage channels Bresega, to the north, and Valdentro, to the south.

A journey through time: the history of Villadose

Did you know that Villadose was already inhabited in Roman times? Thanks to the reclamation works undertaken at the time, the territory was very fertile and represented an important crossing point towards the interior. With the end of the Roman Empire, however, there followed a period of strong hydraulic instability and depopulation.

But the history of Villadose continues: the municipality appears for the first time in documents at the beginning of the 13th century, with the name "Villa Ducis". After the War of Ferrara in 1484, the municipality passed from Este domination to Venetian one, where it remained until the fall of the Republic in 1797. During this period, numerous reclamation works were carried out and many villas were built along the Adigetto, which still bear the names of the Venetian noble families.

In 1778, thanks to the commitment of the bishop of the diocese of Adria-Rovigo Arnaldo Speroni degli Alvarotti, a parish was established in Villadose. However, shortly after the unification of Italy, the municipality was affected by a strong emigration of its inhabitants to South America, due to the flood of Polesine on September 17, 1882, and the agricultural crisis that followed.

Villadose today: the life of the municipality

Today, despite the passage of time, Villadose is a lively and dynamic municipality. In 1923, Ca' Patella palace became the municipal seat and, in 1928, the municipality acquired the locality of Ca' Tron, previously belonging to the municipality of Ca' Emo. In 1938, the Adria State Road 443 was inaugurated, which directly connects Rovigo to Adria.

However, there is an episode in the modern history of the municipality that marked all its inhabitants: the massacre of April 25, 1945. On that occasion, 20 partisans captured in Ceregnano in the locality of Palà were killed near the walls of the cemetery.
