History

The presence of numerous giants' tombs, a nuraghe, and a domus de janas testify to human presence since pre-Nuragic Sardinia. Inhabited since Roman times, Villa San Pietro was part of the Judicate of Cagliari during the Middle Ages, then passed to the Pisan family of della Gherardesca. In 1355, the town became part of the Aragonese Kingdom of Sardinia and was incorporated into the county of Quirra. After a period of depopulation, the town was repopulated starting from the seventeenth century and in 1839 it became a municipality governed by a mayor and a town council.
