Reggio Emilia: the city of the Tricolore

Reggio Emilia is a city located in the center of the Emilia-Romagna region, in the Po Valley. With a population of 169,640 inhabitants, it is the capital of the province of Reggio Emilia. The city owes its name to the Roman consul Marco Emilio Lepido who founded it along the Via Emilia, the ancient road of the Roman Empire that connected Piacenza to Rimini. Reggio Emilia is known as the City of the Tricolore, as the Italian flag was created here on January 7, 1797, in the Tricolore Room of the City Hall, which still hosts today the meetings of the city council.
