Exploring Villa Latina: A tourist guide in the heart of Lazio.

Origin of the name:

Before 1862, the municipality was called "Agnone," but in that year, the name was changed to "Villa Latina" in honor of an ancient Roman thermal villa and an aqueduct.

History:

Villa Latina has a very ancient history. In 770 AD, it was built on a site that had been a campsite for the surviving Sanniti after the battle of Aquilonia against the Romans. In the ninth century, a group of monks settled along the banks of the Mollarino river and built the church of San Mauro and the church of San Pietro. Later, in 1049, Pope Leo IX consecrated the church of San Salvatore di Agnone, an important event not only for the inhabitants of Villa Latina but for the entire Comino Valley.

Later in the tenth century, the counts of Marsi decided to build a network of fortified villages, including Agnone, and the Rocca Malacucchiara was built on a hill as the fortified center. During the fifteenth century, the Rocca was sacked and destroyed, and was finally destroyed in 1435. In the eighteenth century, during the French occupation, the inhabitants of Villa Latina rebelled, led by one of Italy's most famous bandits, Benedetto Panetta.
