Villa Cortese

Welcome to Villa Cortese: a brief presentation of the Municipality

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Villa Cortese, a municipality located in the metropolitan city of Milan in Lombardy. The town has a population of about 6165 inhabitants and is a quiet and pleasant residential area to visit. Villa Cortese borders Legnano, San Giorgio su Legnano, Busto Garolfo and Dairago.

A brief history lesson

The name of the municipality has a possible origin from the Latin term 'Vicus' (meaning 'Villa') and 'Curtis' (meaning 'Courtyard'). Over the centuries, the municipality has had several names, including 'Vilcortex', 'Vilacortexia' and finally 'Villa Cortese'. The town has very ancient historical origins, in fact, the presence of settlements dates back to the Roman era. In a Roman sarcophagus dating back to the 1st century AD, found in the territory, there is evidence of a settlement already present at the time. The municipality was first mentioned in a deed of 1261, with which the Provost and Canons of the 'Convent of San Giorgio' certify the goods they hold between the Olona River, Villa Cortese and the 'Dairasca Road' that connected Legnano with Dairago. In the thirteenth century, Goffredo da Bussero lists an altar dedicated to St. Victor the Martyr in the place called Villa Cortese. Over the years, the Municipality of Villa Cortese has undergone several territorial changes, arousing strong rivalries between neighboring municipalities.

Villa Cortese: history, symbols, and society of a sustainable municipality.

The symbols of the Municipality

The municipal coat of arms was granted with the Decree of the President of the Republic of August 28, 1971, following the renewal of its autonomy in 1966. The chosen design represents a green shoot that arises from the roots of a cut trunk, with reference to the rebirth of the autonomous Municipality from the roots of its previous history.

What to see in Villa Cortese

The municipality has only one church, the Church of San Vittore, named after the patron saint who has been venerated since the thirteenth century.

Society in Villa Cortese

The Municipality is well connected to the neighboring ones thanks to the Movibus bus lines. Villa Cortese is one of the first Italian municipalities to have achieved a good rate of differentiated waste collection, which is around 70%. The town hall, middle and elementary schools are all equipped with photovoltaic systems for the production of electricity and hot water, while the municipal platform offers any type of disposal.
